Migraines seem to be quite common in today’s stressful world, but don’t mistake them for being a normal part of life. Doctors and researchers agree migraines should not happen, and they are not sure why they do occur. A migraine is neurological in origin and can rob one of many of the joys of life while coping with it.

Is it Really a Migraine?
Migraines should be diagnosed by a professional. Here are some common symptoms to watch out for:
- Moderate to severe headache lasting for hours
- Usually one-sided pain (but not always)
- Pounding or throbbing sensation in the head
- Problems focusing due to pain
- Nausea and possibly vomiting
- Sensitivity to light, sound, and certain smells
- Aura before a migraine (for about 1 in 5 patients) usually manifests as visual disturbances
Common Means of Coping with Migraines
Most people turn to pharmaceuticals to help relieve the pain of migraines. Some look for triggers such as alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine and avoid these. Reducing the amount of stress in one’s life can also have a positive impact on migraines. Other suggestions are practicing relaxation techniques, getting sufficient rest, and regularly exercising.
Keeping the Spine Healthy to Control Migraines
The above suggestions may give one temporary relief. However, unless the underlying cause is addressed, migraines will continue to occur. One often-overlooked problem is that a misalignment in the upper neck bones can be behind the pain of migraines. If a misalignment has occurred in either the C1 or C2 vertebra of the neck, pressure can be put on the brainstem, leading to changes in cerebrospinal fluid drainage, nerve function, and the way that blood circulates to the head.
At Centre Kiro Spécifik, we use a gentle upper cervical chiropractic method called NUCCA that helps the bones to move back into place without the force of popping or cracking the spine. Once subluxations are corrected, the body can heal naturally and begin to function at its optimum once again. This can result in fewer migraines and may even eliminate them entirely.
